What is art? No less a pundit than Ali G responded "me don't know, but it probably has something to do with The Gays." This New York Times article however takes a more insightful approach to the question.
My section got approval for a new library technician position; said technician will be assigned to work under me. So soon I'll have another person constantly asking me annoying questions a new technician.
This Dispatch from a Public Librarian in the generally excellent McSweeney's so accurately sums up my experiences at library association conferences that it's almost scary. Favourite quote: "10:36 a.m. Why do so many of the female librarians at this workshop look like men?"
Speaking of accurate depictions of my profession, this editorial cartoon from America's Finest News Source may seem overly harsh, but the truth must be told.
Radiohead just announced dates for their European 2008 tour. A summer trip to Madrid, Berlin, or Glasgow is looking really good right about now. Or Amsterdam. Mmmmmm, Amsterdam. Current Mood: frustrated Current Music: Outkast - Return of the G

02:44 pm - Updated Concert Calendar Here's how I'll be hastening my inevitable hearing loss in the coming months.
9/15 DJ Tiesto @ Love 9/17 Do Make Say Think @ Black Cat 9/20 Arcade Fire/LCD Soundsystem @ Hollywood Bowl (yes, the one in California, hooray!) 10/14 Bad Religion @ 930 10/27 New Pornographers @ 930 11/18 Clap Your Hands Say Yeah @ Rock & Roll Hotel
I was supposed to see The Cure next week, but the show was postponed due to Robert Smith being a dumbass and not finishing the new album. Fortunately, that freed up my schedule to go visit Hollyweird. Since that conflicts with a couple of classes I'm supposed to take for work, I had to fabricate a story about seeing my (not) ailing grandmother who (does not) live in a (non-existent) nursing home in Orange County.

03:31 pm - Happy little Wii clouds If you're like me, you have fond memories of Bob Ross, also known as (to my pre-school self) 'that artist guy with a fro who came on PBS after Mr. Rogers & Sesame Street were over.' While Bob himself has sadly moved onto his own happy little clouds in the sky, his memory may live on in a video game for the Wii. How cool is that? I read this on Wikipedia, so its veracity is impeccable.
Happy 25th birthday to the Compact Disc! Sadly, I don't know if you'll live to see 40, what with these new-fangled 'em pee frees' that the kids are raving about. You may go the way of the audio cassette, an audio format which now solely exists in my 1999 Chevy Cavalier. Does anyone remember the first CD they bought? I'd mention mine, but it's a bit embarrassing.
Superbad was Super[insert glowing adjective here]. It could easily be the funniest movie of the year, if Knocked Up had not come out a few months earlier. As usual, the Onion AV Club review pretty much nails it. Indeed, calling it "the Citizen Kane of dick-joke movies" is no faint praise.
Finally, Patton Oswalt is a diminutive, geeky, music and comic book obsessed comedian, who happened to graduate with an English degree from William & Mary. So basically, he's awesome. This particular anecdote about W&M neatly sums up the college and could describe several people I went there with.
